The cleanup is expected to take a week or more.
The Emergency Manager of Richland County, North Dakota, said that 31 cars of a 70-car train derailed late Sunday night near Wyndmere. Some of the cars leaked petroleum used to make asphalt. No injuries were reported. Wyndmere is about 60 miles southwest of Fargo.
Officials with Canadian Pacific said that the leaks do not pose any public health or safety threat. In a statement, the rail company said, “The safety of crews, first responders, and the public remains our highest priority. Our hazardous materials experts are continuing a full assessment of the incident in coordination with local first responders.”
Cleanup is expected to take between seven and ten days, and crews are allowing the cold weather to help harden the spilled materials.
